Our Information Sessions are open to the public, and cover a topic on the third Tuesday of each month.

We meet in the Community Room beside the Pharmacy in the Bayfield Mall, in Barrie from 6:30pm to 7:30pm; interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP to ensure that there is enough space.

Our Support Group will run after each session for 30 to 60 minutes for individuals who have epilepsy and their family members.

Epilepsy 101:  From Seizures to Diagnosis

Tuesday, September 17th | 6:30pm to 7:30pm | Community Room inside Bayfield Mall

Presented by Loesje Pascos

In this session, Loesje will talk about the various types of seizures, what they can look like, and how a diagnosis of epilepsy is made.  This session is perfect for those who are starting their journey with the disease, or who are simply looking for more information surrounding the topic.  If time permits, there will be a brief Question-and-Answer period.

Light refreshments will be served.

A Support Group meeting will run from 7:30pm to 8pm for individuals who have epilepsy and their family members.

Loesje Pascos works at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre as an Electroencephalography (EEG) Technologist.  She is the Vice-President on the Board of Directors of Epilepsy Simcoe County, and continues to be the Medical Liaison for Epilepsy-related issues or questions.

Strategies & Tips On Dealing With Anxiety That Comes With A Diagnosis

Tuesday, October 15th | 6:30pm to 7:30pm | Community Room inside Bayfield Mall

Presented by Vanessa Angi, MSW, RSW

In this session, Vanessa will talk about the feelings that can occur after a diagnosis is made; she will include some general tips and strategies on dealing with anxiety and low-mood.  This session is perfect for those who have just been diagnosed, and for family and friends who are looking for ways to help with the emotions that can occur.  If time permits, there will be a brief Question-and-Answer period.

Vanessa is a Registered Social Worker specializing in supporting individuals and families to work towards mental wellness.  Vanessa’s focuses on using a strengths based therapeutic approach while using the evidenced based practice of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Talking to Your Health Care Practitioner

Tuesday, November 19th | 6:30pm to 7:30pm | Community Room inside Bayfield Mall

Presented by Shawna Bailey

In this session, Shawna will talk about how to best prepare for any appointments with your health care team.  Whether it’s a first appointment with a neurologist, or a follow-up with a family physician,  this session is perfect for those who are looking to make the most out of their visits.  This session will also touch on the Provincial Guidelines for the management of epilepsy in adults and children.  If time permits, there will be a brief Question-and-Answer period.

Light refreshments will be served.

Shawna Bailey is the Executive Director at Epilepsy Simcoe County, and she sits on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Epilepsy Alliance.  Shawna continually works to find ways to bridge the gap between awareness and education of epilepsy within Simcoe County.

Medications, Side Effects, and When to Seek Help

Tuesday, December 17th | 6:30pm to 7:30pm | Community Room inside Bayfield Mall

Presented by Karim Francis, Pharmacist

In this session, Karim will talk about medications common in treating epilepsy and their common side effects.  Whether you’ve been on specific medications for a period of time, have questions about possible side effects, or are wondering if you should be switching drugs (and are wondering who to ask for help), this Information Session is for you. If time permits, there will be a brief Question-and-Answer period.
